Vilborg

VILBORG

Vilborg was the oldest daughter of Herjólfur and Freyja. According to the history, Vilborg was very upset about her father charging people for access to water in the valley. Whenever her father was not around, she gave people free water. According to the saga, Vilborg was sitting outside the town one day mending her shoe when suddenly a raven came flying, grabbed the shoe and flew away. She chased after him and in the same moment a landslide fell on the house. The whole family died making Vilborg the only survivor. Óðinn is believed to have sent the raven as his messenger to get her out of harm’s way since she always exhibited kindness.

Vilborg was rebellious and a true val kyrie. She was not a traditional elite viking daughter. She wanted to fight and defend her family. As a tenderhearted and compassionate person, she could not stand her father’s bad treatment of others. Vilborg was considered to be the most beautiful girl in the valley and many vikings lusted after her. Vilborg would later build a house

called Vilborgar staðir. Legend has it that Vilborg is buried west of Vilborgarstaðir.

Did you know that shortly after

the death of Vilborg’s family, she

found out that she was carrying

a child?
